Kid City

April 28, 2009

I went to our daughter’s preschool, Kid City at Next Level Church, last week to take the Spring portraits. When I agreed to do it, I had no idea how tired I would be at the end of the day!  What an incredibly cute, hilarious, and energetic bunch of kids they are!

We set up in the lounge outside of the auditorium where I’ll be holding my photography workshop in two weeks.  I knew I didn’t want to do the typical cheesy preschool portraits with the fake books and corny poses.  So I came up with this setup and I think the results turned out pretty classy!  Here is a quick glimpse at the results!  Kid City parents, I’ll let you know when they’re all ready to view online!

This weekend, our church Next Level undertook a huge task – an Extreme Home Makeover!  The Jacobs family was chosen to have their house redone, and I mean REDONE!  We’re talking new kitchen cabinets, new floors, paint, furniture, a playhouse for the kids in the backyard, and more…not too bad for a volunteer-driven weekend project!  Unfortunately, since Sarah and I were shooting the wedding yesterday and since two little kids don’t mix well in a construction zone, we weren’t able to get our hands dirty with the project.

However, I was able to catch up with the Jacobs family Friday afternoon after the home makeover had begun.  I took some portraits of this wonderfully sweet family and thoroughly enjoyed my time with them.  I rushed home on Friday and got some big prints made and framed in time to hang on the wall for the big reveal this evening.  We just got home a few hours ago from taking the girls down to the house to be a part of the big reveal party, and it was a blast!

Below are a few of my favorite portraits of our time together followed by a few shots I grabbed while holding Kyla on my shoulders tonight at the reveal!

Quick Update: I just found a picture of the portraits being hung in the house on a friend’s Facebook page.  You can see that here!

I introduced you to Christa and Michael a few weeks ago.  Yesterday, Sarah and I had the privilege of photographing their wedding at the gorgeous Moorehead Inn.  It was a beautiful day here in Charlotte yesterday and their wedding was perfect.  We had such a great time getting to know Michael and Christa’s friends and family because there were only about 25 guests!  We love a nice, intimate wedding.

So congratulations Michael and Christa!  We wish you the best and hope that you have a blast on your honeymoon!  Here’s a quick glimpse of the day’s events!

It was such a blast photographing these two!  They were so relaxed and comfortable and willing to do whatever we had in mind!  The perfect clients!

From the moment Sarah and I saw these chairs, we knew we had to use them somehow!  Thanks for playing along in the midst of everyone making jokes about you already being an old married couple!dsc_0754

Michael was such a gentleman!  We had this shot planned with Michael and Christa for several weeks and Sarah really nailed it, don’t you think?

I have a few more spots left in the May 9th Beyond the Snapshot workshop.  After talking to several people, I decided to reduce the rate to $75 to allow more people to come!  So if you’ve been thinking about it, now’s your chance!  The price goes back up to $110 on April 28th!  Click on the workshop link above to find out more info and to find out how to register!  I just put an online payment option up for your convenience!

a great Easter weekend

April 15, 2009

We packed up the girls and headed to Radford, VA for Easter weekend to visit with Sarah’s family.  Unfortunately, her youngest sister Charlotte got sick so Dad-in-law was the only one to make the trip up from Richmond.  But we had a blast spending time with Dad-in-law, Sarah’s sister Rosie, our bro-in-law Jonathan and our hilarious nephew Ian.

Here are a few of my favorite shots from the weekend.  I have a few more posted on Facebook, so if you’ve seen these already, forgive me.

One of 3 decent pictures of me over the past 4 years. Sarah had to wrestle the camera out of my hands to get it.

Perfect form, don't you think?

I finally got Ian to slow down for 5 seconds to get this shot!

Easter!

April 9, 2009

We’re packing up and heading up to Radford, VA for Easter weekend with Sarah’s family. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to post from there, but I wanted to take a minute to wish you and your family a happy, safe, and peaceful Easter weekend.

I don’t know about you, but I certainly can use some unwinding time in the midst of a very busy lifestyle. Easter seems like a good time to do just that.  I ran across this quote and I have no idea who the person is that said it, but I thought I’d share.

“Easter spells out beauty, the rare beauty of new life.”  ~S.D. Gordon

It’s plain and simple, but I like it!

day on the farm…

April 8, 2009

I felt like I fell in love with my camera again.  It was just me, my camera, and the farm.

Having grown up in the suburbs and having lived in Los Angeles for 4 years of my adult life, I never really spent much time on the farm.  But recently, Sarah and I hooked up with a local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm where you can buy into the farm and receive a box of fresh produce every week throughout the harvest months.  This farm is only about 15 minutes from us and it’s certified organic, which we love!

Anyway, I struck a deal with the owner of the farm where I would trade some photography for their website and print advertising in exchange for fresh produce!  I absolutely love bartering and wish we could get back to doing more of that in our world!  I love a good old fashioned “gentleman’s agreement!”

But as I was saying, the part I loved the most last Saturday was that I got a chance to take a liesurely approach to photographing my subject instead of the hectic pace of portrait and wedding photography.  Don’t get me wrong, I have no desire to be a product photographer.  I love shooting people!  But it was relaxing to be able to take time to set up my shots and enjoy the beautiful Spring morning.  Oh, and the girls came for a while too!  They love it there, although Kyla wants to go to a “real” farm where they have animals.  Here are a few shots of the day!

hiding eggs…

April 7, 2009

I love Easter.  Not only because of the new life it represents and the joy it brings me through my faith, but holidays are just so much more fun with kids!  Easter was always one of those rich, tradition-filled holidays when I was a kid and I love starting new traditions with our young family.  Admittedly, though, Sarah gets all the credit for coming up with the traditions, but I love them!

The girls went to an Easter party last week with some friends and came back addicted to hiding Easter eggs.  I cannot count the number of egg hunts I’ve participated in over the past 3 days!  Kyla loves the “you’re getting hotter/colder game” while she hunts.  I grabbed a few quick photos Sunday after church while we were hunting in the front yard.  Happy Easter season!  And if you’re in the Charlotte area and need a place to be on Easter Sunday, check out Next Level Church – there’s talk of an Easter Twitter experiment that you won’t want to miss!

rainy days…

April 4, 2009

When we moved to Charlotte two summers ago, it rained about 2 times all summer.  We were in a drought and everything was so incredibly dry.  Now it seems as though we’ll never have to worry about a drought again with as much rain as we’ve been getting!  Call me crazy, but I actually kind of like it.  Don’t get me wrong, I am so excited about the day we’re having today – 75 and sunny, but I like the sound of the rain, the smell of the rain, and the relaxed feel a little rain adds to a day.

I also love taking pictures of the girls on rainy days – both inside and out!

Sarah and I sat down with Michael and Christa last weekend to go over the details of their wedding.  It was a perfect day to sit and talk in a coffee shop because it was pouring outside.  What a great couple!  They’re so easy to talk to and have such a great time together.  In fact, we like them so much that we’re willing to overlook the fact that Michael is a graduate of the other university in Virginia (UVA).  We managed to sneak a few engagement shots in safe from the rain in a covered walkway.  Here are two of our favorite shots of the wet afternoon!  We can’t wait until your wedding at the end of the month Michael and Christa!
