Avery is 3!

July 30, 2009

So this post is a bit overdue since Avery turned 3 on July 5, but life has not been the most conducive to blogging as of late!  We’re looking forward to moving into our new place in 2 days, though, and it’s the calm before the storm, I guess.  Sarah and Kyla are in Charlotte for a few days and I’m hanging out with Avery at my in-laws’ house.

Avery is certainly not the easiest child to photograph.  If you know us well, you know of all the struggles we’ve had with her health – allergies, digestion issues, extreme eczema.  She generally hasn’t felt well for the past 2 years, but it’s summer time and her allergies are not too bad and her eczema has been the best its been since we lived in California 2 years ago.  So I took advantage of the moment and took her out for a few photos.  Here she is, our 3-year-old!  It’s been a blast having some time to her by myself.  She has such a great personality and has had  me cracking up most of the time!

In many other cultures, someone celebrating a birthday is expected to throw a big party and pay for all the food, drinks, and entertainment.

This year for my birthday, in honor of hitting the big 3-0, I’m putting my own spin on things.  In my mind I’m staying 29 forever, but everyone around me keeps saying I can’t do that.  So in lieu of throwing a big party this year, I’m going to shoot someone’s wedding for $29.  Yes, you read that correctly.  $29.

The Basics:

-Send me an email at peterdavis2@gmail.com and tell us why you think you should win this contest by midnight on August 10 (video entries might receive bonus points!).   We love a good story, so tell us yours!  You can nominate yourself, a friend, or a family member.

-Our panel of expert judges will review the entries, and I’ll post the winner on my blog on my birthday, August 11.

Who we’re looking for:

-The winner must be a super-in-love couple who can’t afford a big, fancy wedding – sorry no rich people looking for a freebie!  Please be honest!

-Your wedding must be within a 1.5 hour drive of Charlottesville, VA on a date that we haven’t already booked (if not, that’s ok…we might just need some gas money).

-The winner must be willing to have their pictures and story posted here on my blog.

What the winner will receive:

-Up to 8 hours of coverage on your wedding day for only $29!

-Online proofing of images for you, family, friends, and wedding guests

-No obligation to buy anything else

This should be fun and we can’t wait to read (or see and hear via video) your stories!  Be sure to pass this on to family and friends and feel free to nominate someone who you think is deserving today!  Have fun!

A big thanks to Candice for the inspiration of this contest!

love this job!

Have I ever mentioned that I love being a photographer?  Each time I go out to shoot, I love it even more.  Yes, I get to go to some awesome weddings and sample some delicious cake, but more importantly, I get to meet so many incredible people.

I’m becoming even more excited about some new updates I have for this blog and for my website.  I’ve got a lot of new work I want to include in my galleries and I’m also working with a designer on some branding and new logos!  Stay tuned for more details.  But for now, here’s a fun shot Sarah took of me shooting Nate and Courtney’s first look session in LA a few weeks ago.  If you’re getting married soon and don’t know what a first look session is, be sure to ask!  In my opinion, it is totally the way to go!

the Guys…

July 17, 2009

While we were in Los Angeles a few weeks ago, we had the chance to spend some quality time with our good friends Peter and Veronique Guy.  Veronique is an amazing photographer who was extremely helpful in getting me started in the business!  Sarah and I headed up to Santa Barbara with them one evening while we were there and I helped her shoot a wedding, and then we met up in Culver City a few days later for some photo shooting.  Sarah and I never have any good pictures of us unless Veronique takes them so we had to get her to take some portraits of us.  In exchange, we took some portraits of them.  Then we headed off for sushi!  Here are a few of my favorites that I took of them!

we got a house!

July 16, 2009

If you’ve been following our housing drama, there is an encouraging update!  We found a house! We’re moving in at the beginning of August and we can’t wait.

If you haven’t been following the drama, here it is in as few words as possible:

moved to Charlottesville.  house was falling apart.  moved stuff into storage.  staying with inlaws in Powhatan (outside of Richmond).  endless hours of searching for a new house.  found a house.

We’ve been so thankful for gracious family.  What would we do without them?  We never pictured spending the summer living with Sarah’s parents, but it has been fun.  The kids have certainly enjoyed it!

Here’s a picture of the front of our house from the realtor’s website.  We’ll post some more pictures once we get settled!  It’s a really cool 1930’s house with a great yard in an awesome downtown-ish location.  Don’t worry, this one has been fixed up nicely and doesn’t appear to have any leaks in the roof, mold in the ceiling, or windows falling apart.

30 years…

July 16, 2009

So that dreaded 30 year birthday is just around the corner.  It sounds cliche, but it is hard to imagine 30 years.  That means I’ve been out of high school for 12 years.  I’ve been driving for 14 years, reading for 26, a dad for 5, married for 8, and a friend for 30.

I was going through some pictures from our recent trip to Los Angeles and came across this picture.

This is Dave.  He and I have been friends since the day I was born.  Our moms were best friends before we were born and their friendship was passed on to us!  There were the endless GI Joe battles. Countless games of tennis, basketball,  and soccer.  Sneaking out to light fireworks all over the neighborhood (don’t tell my dad).  Endless hours of me watching him play his new video games (sure he let me play, but I always sucked at video games so I would lose my turn in the first minute).

We roomed together in college, he was the best man in my wedding, we moved to LA around the same time, and our friendship continues even though I headed back to the East Coast with my family.  Life doesn’t get much richer than having a lifelong friend like Dave.  Now he’s getting married (well I guess he’s  already married, but they’re celebrating with a big wedding with everyone) in October and I’m honored to be in the wedding.  I also haven’t been in a wedding since I became a wedding photographer, so it’ll be fun to be on the other side of the camera!

Here’s to you, Dave!  Can’t wait to see you in the fall!

Oh, and here’s one more picture.  This is a recreation of a picture we have of us in preschool.  If all my stuff wasn’t scattered about with our recent move, I’d post that up here too!

I’ve known Nathan since our freshman year of college.  He’s always been a true man’s man.  Camping, hiking, and eating ranked among the top of concerns in Nathan’s world when I met him.  Okay, I can’t keep going on calling him Nathan.  It’s Nate.  I was trying to sound all fancy while talking about his wedding, but he will always be Nate.

At any rate, Nate was always a thoughtful and curious guy (his dad hit it on the nail with an amazing toast at the reception).  We always knew that it would take a very special girl to make Nate truly happy.

I heard murmurs of a girlfriend about a year ago.  All I knew of Courtney was that they met at Biola University and that they looked happy in their pictures on Facebook.  Then came word of engagement!  Nate was getting married!  He must have found that special girl.

And no doubt that Courtney is that perfect girl for Nate.  We didn’t get a chance to meet Courtney until the day of their wedding, but my first impression of her was that she was an easy-going kind of woman.  We met her in the parking lot of the church as she hopped out of the car wearing jeans and a shirt.  After we exchanged hugs, she said, “Give me a few minutes to throw my dress on and we’ll be ready to go!”

I have never seen a couple more excited on their wedding day.  Smiles, laughs, and kisses were endless.  Sarah and I were so blessed to be a part of their wedding day!  It was a true joy to spend the day with them and also to catch up with many friends from Los Angeles that we had not seen in several years.  Thanks so much Nate and Courtney for flying us out to LA for the weekend!  Click on the picture below to view some of my favorite shots of the day on Facebook (I know FB isn’t the most classy way to showcase wedding photos, but FB pictures are better than no pictures, right?)  By the way, you don’t have to be a Facebook member to view the photos!  So click away.
